silver surprise

over a month ago, i hurriedly bought a pair of pants in a department store chain. they're more casual than what i normally wear, so i never even took them from the drawer until this morning. i put them on, then sat outside with coffee to read the daily news. suddenly i felt poking in my backside. i reached behind me expecting to find an insect of some sort but instead found buttoned back pockets which i didn't realize existed - and tucked deep inside each pocket, a jewelry card with a sole silver earring attached.

i photographed the earrings as i thought about what to do with them. should i keep them? return them to the store? what good to them or to me is one earring of a pair? and it happened over five weeks ago!

what do you think? what would you do?

I would take them back. A little good Karma never hurt anyone. :)

I would dig the back pockets or all of the pockets to see if the missing earrings are there. Hahaha...

Take pictures of them and blog about them just like you've done. Then I'd probably take them back to have them say, "Just keep them, what can we do with just one earring?" It makes me wonder who did it and why.

I think I would throw them out. Since five weeks its likely they were already taken off of the store inventory - and what are they going to do with one earring - its not likely that they kept the other one waiting to see if its match will show up.

Just the fact that you are so honest that you are asking the question makes me smile. Thank you for that.

That's so weird. I'd probably take them back, but make sure they knew I didn't steal them!

I'm not sure its trendy to wear unmatching earrings anymore...I would take them back (not just because of that - more by way of trying to figure out why someone would take just one of them?)

Put them under your pillow tonight and hope for the best.

I'm with Liz, I'd return them too... take your receipt along too.

maybe, it's for promotions, so that you'll have to buy the other pair. it happens, every time. makes your mouth water.

I'd probably bring them back, but I don't think I'd make a special trip for it. I'm sure I'd put them aside with intentions of bringing them along with me the next time I went to that store. Also knowing me, I'm sure I'd forget about it almost as soon as I put them in that "safe place where I won't forget them".

I've got it... They're ear ring pushers! "First one's free" and all that.

i did take them back. Liz's "karma" statement rang true and it dawned on me that that's why i called the store so soon after i found them. they're not mine - and to keep them would just be wrong.

the customer service lady was pretty unimpressed with the whole story but thanked me for returning them. i bet they get thrown away - or passed on to some clerk with more than one hole in each lobe!

BiPolar Jane: honest, to a fault. sometimes it's a curse... Janie B: that was my first thought, too! The Unusual Suspects: i think if i slept with them under my pillow, i'd dream dreams of jail!

I used to work in retail security. (Loss Prevention) It warms my heart that you notified the store when you made your discovery. It's been years since I've been in that line of work, but back when I was doing it, your phone call would have been valuabe information for me in my persuit of shoplifters. Stores pass those losses on to the rest of us in the form of raising their prices to offset the loss. Having said all of that...The store already took the hit...I would have kept them for crafts or threw them out.
