the long-awaited poppy

if i could grow only one flower, i'd want poppies. the ruffly foliage, the delicate petals, the ornate pods, the minuscule seeds, the colors. even the name: poppies. there's nothing about poppies that i don't love!

i've tried to grow poppies and have failed more times than i can count. seeds, plants, seed pods from friends' gardens - nothing works. i thought i finally had a winner here, just one plant, and have been watching it closely all summer. last evening i photographed it beginning to unfurl. then i left the camera and lens on the table so i could run out first thing this morning to catch it wide open and in all its splendor. and here it is. beautiful still, but obviously, sadly, gone by.
poppy: last evening :-)
poppy: this morning :-(

I very much agree. Poppies are the happiest flowers! My mother-in-law had some in her garden that I was able to get some photos of. I'm going to miss her garden mainly for them. I'm sorry your poppy didn't make it...hope it comes back to life for you!

I have poppies in my garden...I've never planted them, they just "arrive"
every year! (I'll be taking pictures for my bolg shortly).

I adore field poppies, seeing them in fields just takes my breath away!

But for looks and smell, it has to be Sweet Peas. Now that's a scent that really takes your breath away!

I'm sorry your poppy didn't last longer. Did you try wild poppy seeds? They may be hardier. The wild ones around here do seem to last long.

I am feeling your pain. Not sure where you are but I got filled with poppy fever & bought some "Icelandic Poppy" starts thinking they would be lovely in Alaska right!? Well, I was limited to keeping them confined to pots. They did bloom in multi-colors & I am truely thrilled to my core. Have to say though, when I drove by some local yards that were exploding with them my buttons were pushed. You've made me grateful again for that sprinkle of poppy life gracing our yard. They may return next year. Wishing you poppies...
