ka-boom berries!

for a few days now, i've been trying to identify these berries, which are scattered all over the driveway at work. elderberry, i guessed. a type of cherry, emailed my friend barry. i may never know their true identity, but it makes no difference. from now on, they will always be known here as "firecracker berries", due to the surprising, exploding sounds they made as my feet and my tires slowly crept over them in an effort to snap this photo. so loud was the sound, i didn't associate it with the berries right away. and it sounded so funny, i ran over them a few times more, just to hear it!

Cool. I thought they looked like our wild plum...but they could be cherries.

Maybe Buckthorn?

These little buggers are raining down daily all over the schoolyard. To patrol at recess is riskier than a tour through a ball bearing factory! And the sun-baked purple streaks are ever so lovely on the windshield...

Ah, Barry is so impressed -- the girl is correct. Buckthorn! He's not familiar with it, but found the evidence in his tree books.

Congratulations! I think she deserves a prize.

gretchen: buckthorn! the girl is so smart! she also remembers learning that they're very invasive - which would explain why i never noticed them in familiar places before!
mary: don't recall them on the schoolyard, either!
Tabor: they do look cherry-like, but smaller. a big pit inside a little fruit.
nobodybutmelove your hydrangea picture!! now THAT'S a plant!!
