too much of a good thing

many years, there are no tomatoes at all. sometimes, there have been small disappointing green ones to pick just before the first frost of september. in good years, there have been a few small red ones towards the end of august that get shared with critters and hornworms. but this year, there are tomatoes! the garden shimmers red with them as i pluck the heavy fruits from the plants. never have i canned, only served tomatoes sliced thick with basil, oil, and mozzarella or cut up in a garden salad. but this year, there's no keeping up with the crop! gazpacho, anyone?

Me too. I planted 18 plants this year; three different varieties. I've never canned either, but am seriously considering it!

I have several varieties and we have been getting buckets of tomatoes...none as nice and round and unblemished as yours...but they still taste marvelous.

hush your mouth.
there is no such thing as...too many tomatoes.
(if you have too many to use on any given day, slow-roast at 225 for about 45 mins, 1 hour. cool; freeze. use in pasta in Feb. invite me to dinner.)

It makes my mouth water just to think of big red vine ripened tomatoes. Consider yourself lucky.

Ooooh, I *love* gazpacho. How about sun-drying them for the future? (Argh, it sounds like a good idea, but it also sounds like a lot of work....)

I'm in the same boat! We're having lots of tomato sandwiches and gazpacho around here!

I linked this in my Friday Five over at Kate's Library.

Those tomatoes look delicious. So plump and brilliantly red. I'm sure they're juicy and firm too. Well done. :)

The pic is great, my question is, how do you fade out the back and focus on just the tomatoes? I've tried and just can't seem to get it done right.

Casey: i used a 90mm macro lens for the shot. it gets in really, really close - i took the picture of my mother's ring with it. but it also takes amazing portraits, focusing on the subject and blurring the background. just like the tomatoes!

Oh, what a great idea. I'm going to make some gazpacho. I'm glad I saw that you too are wondering what to do with all the produce this summer. I can't wait. I'm made salsa, numerous loaves of zuchini bread, pickles, pickled beans, blanced beans, frozen shredded zuchini, 3 bean salad, thai bean salad....but forgot about gazpacho. I'll make it this weekend. Yeah!
