caterpillar

this small creature is one of the reasons i let milkweed grow wild here. in a few week's time, this caterpillar will have undergone metamorphosis and emerged into his final stage of life - as a beautiful monarch butterfly.

yesterday he was here all day, but today he is gone, with no sign of a chrysalis anywhere. i guess he's gone someplace else to change.

this reminds me of elementary school when my science class hatched monarchs. Before that I remember going our and looking for milkweed with monarch eggs and getting poison ivy instead. Still, fond memories :]

Love your photos and blog, thanks so much. My blog following program tells me that there is an immediately subsequent message with an image with a reddish spot of color set within green, but there must not be a title to it, as I can't click on it, directly, and it doesn't seem to be coming up in the labels or date lists, either. I'd like to see it, and read your comment. Thanks!

He is really fat!

Maybe he'll come visit you in his next stage and you will be awed.

They eat my fennel and sometimes the parsley, but I enjoy the show.

still no sign of a chrysalis. i would dearly like to know where it is so i can photograph it in various stages and perhaps catch the creature emerging.

colleen: you'll be happy to know they still hatch caterpillars in elementary schools. amazing for the kids to watch the process and the release is always so joyful! Nora: i have do hope he, or one of this siblings, will be back. i haven't seen many monarch butterflies yet this summer. Tabor: i've had these caterpillars eat dill, too - and, like you, i just let them have it. Jenny Schouten Short: that's what makes me think he's holed up somewhere in a chrysalis by now. AlexyRouse94: you are too kind. happy to see someone else loves nature like i do! and Star: i do love a good technological challenge! are other postings coming through full and clear? the title of the post is caterpillar and you're not able to click on that? can you go directly to the posting through the main page of serendipitous. the only other thing i can think to tell you to do is refresh your browser. i hope it works!

Now the red leaf title/link is coming through, and I was able to click on it, go to the message (it was that message, not the caterpillar one, that wasn't available, due to the lack of the title...or the title just wasn't appearing for me), and enjoy it and emphathize, thanks!
