pink zinnia

never before have i planted zinnias. but this year i broke down, ostensibility because i found them on sale but actually because i am enthralled by the brilliance of the flowers. in the perennial garden with its muted shades of green, blue and yellow, the zinnias stand out like circus clowns, all orange and red and cerise. normally i might not like that but this year, it's good. maybe i'm subconsciously trying to cram color into these few short months because last winter was so bleak and so stark for so long.

Zinnias are some of my favorites! They are so overt, so blatant and "in your face". I love to put the chinese red and the schoolbus yellow with the hot fuschia! I hear you sucking wind through your teeth in a reactionary wince...Glad to see you are jazzing up the greenness!

my father always had a beautiful garden everywhere we lived even if it was only window boxes in an apartment. every time we moved the flowers and plants were always the hardest things to leave behind. jg

I am usually a cosmo girl, admiring the delicate princess petals in their cotton candy colors. I laughed when I read your post because this year I planted zinnias for the first time since my old 4-H garden, even buying the peppermint stripe ones, because I longed for color. I love winter, and I never tire of the snow, but this year our eyes needed to wake up again in the spring. cb
