onlooker

yesterday i watched as this butterfly flitted around my garden, landing on the echinacea, resting for a while, then floating off to somewhere else. she returned many times - at least i think it was the same creature. finally she landed and stayed, and was still there as dusk fell. now this morning, she is there still, unmoving. i did not disturb her to take this photo but now i wonder: do butterflies sleep? or did she die yesterday as i looked on in fascination?

If they die they usually fall to the ground. They don't go dormant for such a long time...so she may be at her life's end. This is the time of year many of them begin to run out of steam...or should I say nectar.

Tabor: I knew you'd know the answer. I have not gone out to see if I can find the remains - but I'll look in the morning. Thanks for responding!

I love watching through the windows at Amber's new home......there is one butterfly - or at least I THINK it is the same butterfly - that has been flitting through the trees beyond her back yard. It is like a nature preserve out there and I can't wait for the temps to cool off enough so I can go out there and explore it.
Beautiful post....as always!

Cosmos bless her little butterfly soul. The wheel turns for us all, and, if these were her last moments, she not only spent them during a beautiful day in a beautiful garden perched on a beautiful flower, but she also has achieved some fleeting fame thanks to you, and brought joy to all our hearts. Enviable legacies.
