six small plants growing in the woods at the edge of the yard. i planted it there a few years back, hoping it would take off, like my neighbor's down the street. not so, but i am still happy to see this small patch return year after year. i feel fortunate to have caught it in this state, budded up with the grayish-green leaves still furled tightly around the stem.

Tabor, i don't know nearly as much about flowers as you do - but it's Sanguinaria, a native wildflower, grown from zhizomes - with seeds spread by ants, of all things. perhaps that's my problem - they just haven't found it yet. the flower looks more like an anemone than a crocus but i'm pretty sure it's not the same family. root can be used as a red dye, hence the name. hope that helps?
I was puzzled myself about what sort of flower that was. It reminded me a little bit of a rulip. It looks very pretty. Too bad that it hasn't spread more like you wanted it to. Maybe you have to plant more of them and add some sandy soil.
these are very small - only two to three inches tall. i got way down on the ground to get this shot. the sandy soil is a good idea, Irene. it might bring in the ants!
